This specimen was lot 1622 in Sincona sale 94 (Zurich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,356 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''DEUTSCHLAND Baden-Durlach, Markgrafschaft, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum. Leopold, 1830-1852. Dukat 1842, Karlsruhe. Aus Rheingold. Mit verkehrter "1" in der Jahreszahl. Selten. Nur 2'130 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich.'' ([[Germany]], [[German States, Baden-Durlach|grand duchy of Baden]], Leopold, 1830-52, ducat of 1842, Karlsruhe mint, made from Rhine gold, with a reversed "1" in the date. Rare. Only 2,130 pieces struck, Extremely Fine.)"</blockquote> Napoleon rewarded the margrave of Baden's sycophantic loyalty by elevating him to grand duke and tripling his territory. The state survived until the collapse of the Wilhelmine empire in 1918. The SCWC divides the Badenish ducats of 1832-42 into two types (KM 201 and KM 208) but Friedberg lumps them together.
