This specimen was lot 23741 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $264. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "AZORES. Azores - Brazil. 300 Reis, ND (1887). Luis I. NGC VF-30; Countermark: AU Standard. Crowned G.P. countermark within incuse circle. Issued by decree o[f] 31 March 1887. On 1751 Brazil 320 Reis of Jose I. The host coin is charmingly toned with moderate, even wear. The countermark is fairly well centered on the obverse." This countermark was applied to all manner of foreign coins circulating in the islands. THis Brazilian 320 réis was over a century old when it was countermarked. Crown size coins were valued at 1200 réis, making this coin theoretically 400 réis, but the SCWC lists no such denomination for this countermark. We have filed it as a 300 réis.
