''Herinek kannte nur das Exemplar des Wiener Münzkabinetts. Leopold, zweiter Sohn von Kaiser Ferdinand III. und Maria Anna von Spanien, *09.06.1640 Wien, Ó05.05.1705 Wien, war zunächst für den geistlichen Stand bestimmt, wurde dann aber 1656 zum König von Böhmen und 1658 zum deutschen Kaiser gekrönt. In seiner langen Regierungszeit verfolgte seine Politik zwei Ziele: Spanien den deutschen Habsburgern zu gewinnen und auch Ungarn zu rekatholisieren. Das erste verwickelte ihn in langwierige Kriege mit Frankreich. Der Versuch, Ungarn zu rekatholisieren, rief wiederholt Aufstände hervor; die Ungarn suchten Hilfe bei den Türken. So kamen die Bündnisse Ludwigs XIV. mit den Türken gegen das Reich zustande, was die Türkenkriege zur Folge hatte. Zwar erfochten Leopolds bedeutende Feldherren (u. a. Prinz Eugen von Savoyen, Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden - der "Türkenlouis") immer wieder glänzende Siege, doch zerrüttete diese Politik Wirtschaft und Finanzen. In Deutschland legte Leopold I. damit den Keim für den weiteren Zerfall des Reiches, in dem die größeren Territorialstaaten, insbesondere Brandenburg-Preußen, immer stärker wurden. So legte der Kaiser selbst den Grundstein für den späteren "Dualismus", der Österreich im 19. Jahrhundert dem engeren deutschen Raum entfremden sollte.'' (Herinek knew only of the copy in the Vienna Coin Cabinet. Leopold, the second son of Emperor Ferdinand III and Maria Anna of Spain, was born 1640 in Vienna and died there in 1705. He was initially intended for the clergy, but was crowned King of Bohemia in 1656 and crowned emperor of Germany in 1658. In his long reign his policy had two objectives: help the Spanish Habsburgs and to re-catholicize Hungary. The first engaged him in lengthy wars with France. Trying to re-catholicize Hungary, repeatedly called forth uprisings; Hungary sought help from the Turks. So Louis XIV allied with the Turks against the empire, which resulted in the Turkish wars. Although Leopold had the help of brilliant generals (including Prince Eugene of Savoy, Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden - the "Turkish Louis") and won brilliant victories, but these wars shattered Economic and Financial Affairs. In Germany Leopold I laid the seeds for the further disintegration of the empire, in which the larger territorial states, particularly Brandenburg-Prussia, increasingly took the lead. So the emperor laid the foundation for the later "dualism" which would eliminate Austria from Germany in the 19th century.)"</blockquote> Friedberg mentions this type for 1659-96 but it seems to be omitted from the SCWC. It seems unlikely that these monstrous coins were intended to circulate in the channels of commerce but rather presentation pieces for the emperor to pass out to his friends.
