This specimen was lot 52012 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $870. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Austria|AUSTRIA]]. Holy Roman Empire. Taler (72 Kreuzer), 1557. Vienna Mint. Ferdinand I. PCGS AU-50. A fairly SCARCE and seldom seen type, this early crown presents a few light planchet cracks, but remains without much in the way of handling, all while sporting a delightful cabinet tone and great originality. Tied with one other example as the only specimens seen at PCGS for the type. From an Old Brooklyn Collection." Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteenth century. This type was struck 1556-57. It varies from the very similar Dav-8013 by having a single headed eagle instead of the double headed eagle which later became standard. The undated Dav-8010 also shows a single headed eagle and Ferdinand with a beard.
