This specimen was lot 1249 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$14,419 including buyers' fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''SAINT EMPIRE, GLATZ (KLODZKO), Comté, Ernest de Bavière (1549-1560), AV ducat, 1549, Droit: + ERNESTVS D G COMES PALA RHENI V BA DVX Lion de Bohême rampant à gauche. Revers: + MONETA AVREA COMITATVS GLACEN Les écus de Bohême, Bavière et Glatz posés en triangle sous la date, entre deux rameaux. Extrêmement Rare. Superbe'' (Holy Roman Empire, county of Glatz, Ernest of Bavaria (1549-60), gold ducat of 1549. Obverse: rampant lion of Bohemia to left, legend around; reverse: arms of Bohemia, Bavaria and Glatz in a triangle, date below, legend around. Extremely rare, extremely fine.)"</blockquote> Silesia fell to the Hapsburgs in 1526 along with Bohemia, Moravia and the remnants of Hungary. Many local dynasts, including Ernest of Bavaria, held titles to various pieces of the province but the emperor was clearly the sovereign.
