This specimen was lot 22237 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $408. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Australia|AUSTRALIA]]. Sovereign, 1889-M. Melbourne Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-62. Second obverse variety with angled 'J'. Sharply detailed with numerous grade-defining luster grazes in the fields." This "jubilee head" type was struck 1887-93 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints. The [[Australia 1880-M sovereign|shield reverse]] used 1871-87 was retired. The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920.
