This specimen was lot 21002 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $24,000. The catalog description [1] noted, "ARGENTINA. 8 Escudos, 1830-RA P. La Rioja Mint. NGC AU-55. An EXTREMELY RARE date, surpassed only by the 1829 date of which only three are known. Perhaps only ten examples of this date exist, most of which do not qualify for grading. Appearances on the market are few and far between, with only two examples cited at auction since 2006 and four certified between NGC and PCGS combined. This example, the finest of those certified, possesses a bold strike with detail atop the designs that is on the cusp of Mint State quality. The luster is also complete with intense orange-gold tone throughout contributing to the superb appeal. Magnified inspection reveals a few marks, most notably between the sun's rays, but their impact on the in-hand appearance is slight and they almost certainly contributed to this piece not receiving an even higher grade. For the specialist in the series, an opportunity that is hard not to consider "once-in-a-generation"! From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection." The early years of independence were torn by struggles between the centralists in Buenos Aires and regionalists in La Rioja, Cordoba, Salta and elsewhere who even issued their own coinage. This type was struck for the confederation 1826-35 and all dates are expensive.
