This type was struck for [[Angola]] in 1848, 1851 and 1853 in Lisbon. The Portuguese landed in 1491 and immediately made the region a major slaving station, which trade would not end until the 1850's when the British Royal Navy interdicted the trade. The later nineteenth century was devoted to resource extraction and fending off attempts by the other colonizing powers to seize territory. This specimen was lot 29298 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Portuguese Colony - Maria II 1/2 Macuta 1851 MS64 Brown NGC. Highly lustrous with faint bluish iridescence in the open fields and pinkish highlights around the protected devices. Rarely encountered this fine, and currently the single finest graded example at NGC." A similar type ([[Angola 1860 1/2 macuta|KM 58]]) was issued in 1858 and 1860 for Peter V.
