This copper macuta was issued in [[Portugal]] for Angola. This specimen was lot 76100 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Angola|ANGOLA]]. Macuta, 1789. Lisbon Mint. Maria I. PCGS AU-50. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck in 1789 in Lisbon. The Portuguese landed in 1491 and immediately made the region a major slaving station, which trade would not end until the 1850's when the British Royal Navy interdicted the trade. The later nineteenth century was devoted to resource extraction and fending off attempts by the other colonizing powers to seize territory. Silver issues in the eighteenth century included [[Angola 1796 2 macutas|two]], [[Angola 1784 4 macutas|four]], [[Angola 1784 6 macutas|six]], [[Angola 1789 8 macutas|eight]], [[Angola 1783 10 macutas|ten]] and [[Angola 1783 12 macutas|twelve macutas]], most of them scarce.
