PCGS AU-50.&amp;quot; Ancona, an Italian port on the Adriatic Sea, was a part of the Byzantine empire in the early middle ages but obtained her independence as Byzantine control loosened after AD 1000. With the aid of a large Jewish community, she competed with Venice for trade with the Levant. In 1532, Clement VII conquered the city and added it to the [[Vatican|Papal States]], where she remained until Italian unification in 1859-61.&lt;br /&gt;
