Chihli 1908 (year 34) 1 dollar Y-73.4
Chihli (or Zhili) was a province originally incorporating the present-day capital city of Beijing. The word ‘Zhihli’ translates to ‘centrally ruled’, in other words, the region was under the direct administration of the Emperor rather than functioning as a normal province. Chihli had several mints, the earliest beginning operations in 1645 AD.
The specimen shown was lot 21127 in the Ponterio sale 165 (Hong Kong, April 2012), where it sold for $4,182. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), Year 34 (1908) "Crosslet Four". NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines. Cleaned long ago resulting in hairlines."
