Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32762
SB524-32762r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32762 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Patagon, 1696. Antwerp Mint. Charles II. PCGS AU-50. An handsome survivor with a rich cabinet toning. The adjustment marks that so often plague these types are almost exclusively near the edges." Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. These patagons were issued from Brussels 1686-95 and Antwerp (hand mintmark, shown here) 1694-1700 but all dates are rare. The feeble reign of Charles II, the last of the Spanish Hapsburgs, was a disaster for Belgium, as the region was repeatedly invaded and devastated by the armies of Louis XIV. The turmoil did not end with Charles' death, as the powers of Europe fought a fifteen year war over partitioning the Hapsburg empire. In 1714, Belgium passed to Austria to keep it out of the hands of the French.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4498; KM-107.1.
